I Work at MRM and Have Been a Patient at MRM-Kylie Ross’ Story
Hi! This is Kylie at the Front Desk. ***Some of you may already know that I am pregnant! However, most probably don’t know I struggled with infertility for a few years before I found success with the help from the amazing team at Michigan Reproductive Medicine. I want to briefly share my story as well as some of our front desk day-to-day experiences here in the office.
I am one of the many unlucky women who suffer from Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I have always had an irregular menstrual cycle, sometimes only having one or two periods a year. It might sound like a dream only dealing with a period two weeks out of the year, until one tries to conceive. I have never needed birth control because by the time I got married I had lost my period all together. I went to three different Ob-Gyn’s before I finally got my period back. I went on metformin, progesterone, Clomid, and Femara, which all failed to induce my menses.
The last Ob-Gyn I saw told me I needed to stop running and increase my body fat percentage by about 5%. This was both the most and least desirable treatment I could have asked for. I was prescribed cupcakes and doughnuts, but with little to no exercise. As amazing and awful it was, it worked! I began menstruating regularly and could start monitoring my basal body temperature, using ovulation prediction kits, and taking follicle-stimulating medication on days 3-7 of my cycle. This was a huge step for me and I actually was excited to get a period every 30-50 days because it had been non-existent for so long. Eventually, that excitement subsided as I continually tested negative pregnancy urine strips, wasn’t finding any traces of a possible LH Surge, was putting on weight and not exercising. On top of all this, my Clomid dosage was increasing every month reaching up to 5 pills a day! I felt like a crazy person and can’t believe I still have a husband, friends, and in-laws who like me.
About two years after we began trying to get pregnant, we decided to take a break because we were moving across the country. My husband was starting school and the stress of it all was getting to me. I applied and interviewed with several different jobs, and Michigan Reproductive Medicine happened to be one of the first to offer me a position!
I love working here. Every time one of our IVF patients gets a positive pregnancy test, our entire staff gathers around the phone and informs them of the good news. We call these “Whoopie Calls”. The first Whoopie Call I experienced had a memorable effect on me. I became super emotional and got the chills all over. It was at that point that I felt inclined to ask Dr. Mersol-Barg for some professional advice.
I wasn’t expecting to become a patient at MRM, but Dr. Mersol-Barg and the rest of the staff were so encouraging and welcomed my husband and I with open arms (literally). In my experience, the treatment was both meticulous and aggressive in the best way possible. I felt like every step was thoroughly thought out, yet I didn’t feel like the process dragged out. I felt like my personal case was given a lot of thought and energy, which as a patient I appreciated considering that the other clinics I went to didn’t compare to the amount of time our clinic took personalizing my own individual plan.
On occasion, my job at the front desk involves keeping the Doctors on time and informing the patients how much longer their wait will be when things are running behind. I can vouch that the reason things run a little behind sometimes is because the Doctors take the time to answer every question the patient has in detail. They truly care about making each patient’s experience the best it can be. This is something that stands out about our office and how the care here differs from other larger clinics.
As a Front Desk Coordinator, I love being part of the process that helps create a family. We get to experience the highs in our patients’ successes, but also the lows. We are with you every step of the way during what I know can be a long, emotional journey.
**Kylie had a healthy baby girl. Shortly after the baby arrived, Kylie and her husband returned to Utah. Although we miss Kylie, we are so happy to have been a part of her life. Thank you Kylie for all the joy you brought to MRM.
