October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October is breast cancer awareness month. According to recent statistics, about 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. In 2016, an estimated 246,660 new cases of breast cancer are expected to be diagnosed in women in the U.S., along with 61,000 new cases of non-invasive (in situ) breast cancer (data from www.breastcancer.org. Sep 30, 2016). It is extremely important for women to do monthly self- breast exams and have the recommended medical screenings to aide in early detection. A wonderful resource for breast cancer information is The National Breast Cancer Foundation, INC. In honor of breast cancer awareness month, the foundation is offering a free guide about breast health to every one who requests it.
