Hormone testing checks specific hormones produced by the ovary, pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands and pancreas, which may provide important clues about hormonal function and reproductive function.
For Women
Ovarian Reserve Assessment
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
- Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH)
- Ultrasound assessment of resting ovary follicle count (not a hormone test, but essential to assess ovarian reserve).
- Estradiol
Other Hormone Testing
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Prolactin from the pituitary gland in the brain.
- DHEAS/17-hydroxyprogesterone from the adrenal gland on top of the kidney.
- Glucose-Insulin Challenge test: Insulin and glucose tested when fasting in the morning followed by a repeat of these tests two hours after a sugar drink is consumed.
Abnormalities of these tests can impair the ability to release an egg (ovulate), cause irregular menstrual cycles, produce excess hair growth and impair fertility. These abnormalities may also increase the risk of miscarriage and problems for mothers and babies during pregnancy and after delivery.
For Men with Abnormal Semen Analysis Results
Testicular Function Assessment
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
- Testosterone
- Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
- Prolactin from the pituitary gland in the brain.
