Boy or Girl?
Michigan Reproductive Medicine supports parents who are interested in family balancing and/or avoiding sex-linked genetic disease.
If you already have a child and desire another baby of the other gender, we offer sex selection services (referred to as family balancing), which will help you have an equal number of children of each gender. Assisted reproductive technologies allow you to reach this goal by choosing the sex of the embryo before you become pregnant.
To determine the sex of an embryo, In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is done with removal of several cells from the part of an embryo that would become the placenta. These cells are then analyzed for the X and Y chromosomes using technology called Preimplantation Genetic Screening (PGS).
When the embryo’s gender is discovered, we can also learn if the embryo with the preferred gender has the normal number and distribution of chromosomes: 23 chromosomes, two of each for a total of 46 chromosomes.
This testing, often called comprehensive chromosome screening, helps reduce the risk of having a child with disorders caused by an abnormal number of chromosomes, such as Downs Syndrome, and can also help avoid early miscarriages.
This approach is about 99% reliable, meaning when you have your baby, he or she will be of the preferred gender.
