ZIKA Virus: When Trying to Conceive
ZIKA virus infection continues to be a major concern for those who are trying to conceive and for pregnant women.
Much about the virus remains a mystery to researchers.
What is known about ZIKA?
It is known women who become infected when pregnant are at high risk of giving birth to a child with severe birth defects; such as microcephaly where the brain does not develop correctly.
It is known you can get the ZIKA virus through the bite of an infected mosquito and through coming into contact with bodily fluids of a person who has been infected with ZIKA.
Researchers have found the virus seems to live the longest in semen; and therefore the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends men who have traveled to an area of possible ZIKA exposure have protected sex (through the use of condoms and dental dams) and to prevent pregnancy in a partner for at least 6 months. The CDC website has the most recent updates on ZIKA, what is being discovered, and on areas where you risk ZIKA exposure. Visit: https://www.cdc.gov/zika/
How do you know if you have been infected with ZIKA?
If you become infected with ZIKA you may have vague flu like symptoms, or you could have no symptoms at all. This is one of the reasons why it is so important to reduce your risk of exposure if you are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or trying to impregnate someone.
There are lab tests to try and determine if a person has been infected with ZIKA. However; the testing is rather new and has to be done at appropriate timing from ZIKA exposure. The following CDC website has information on the testing currently available: https://www.cdc.gov/zika/hc-providers/types-of-tests
How do you reduce your risk of ZIKA exposure?
Do not travel to an area where ZIKA is present.
Do not exchange bodily fluids with a person who has travelled to a ZIKA infected area within the past 6 months.
